The purpose of Minneota Dollars for Scholars shall be to expand access to higher education for graduates of Minneota High School, ISD #414 in the state of Minnesota by promoting the Minneota Dollars for Scholars program, developing an operational structure, raising funds for student aid distributions, and distributing awards on a fair and nondiscriminatory basis.

Founded in 2001, Minneota Dollars for Scholars has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to Minneota High School graduates. Minneota High School is located in the small rural town of Minneota, MN which is located in the SW corner of Minnesota.

Before Minneota Dollars, students would have to apply for each scholarship individually.  Now, they can apply for over 20 scholarships by filling out only one form. Another advantage of Minneota Dollars for Scholars comes when they apply for financial aid.  Before, if students received scholarship money, many schools would reduce their aid by that amount, but with a Dollars for Scholars scholarship, not only do the schools NOT do that, some even match it.

The scholarships awarded come from donations from area businesses and individuals, endowments, memorials and from fundraisers held by Minneota Dollars for Scholars.  Minneota Dollars for Scholars also manages  "named scholarships." These are scholarships sponsored by businesses & organizations or by families and individuals. The board works with these groups to set up criteria for their scholarship and then Minneota Dollars for Scholars does all the work from there.  Individuals representing each named scholarship have an opportunity to hand out their awards at our banquet.

Scholarships don't just go to the outstanding students or athletes.  The student's entire school resume is taken into account.  Many of these named scholarships have specific criteria which we must follow in placing the awards. For example, maybe they want it to go to someone going into a certain field of study. Whatever criteria are selected, however, the students must apply to win any award.
